Evolution of interference control in ICP-MS: From correction models to MS/MS
Part 1 (G. Hudin): ICP-MS technology has evolved over recent decades into an indispensable tool for ultra-trace analytical applications. One of the key challenges, however, remains the effective elimination of spectral and non-spectral interferences, which can significantly impact accuracy and detection limits. This presentation highlights the critical turning points in the development of interference removal strategies in ICP-MS.
Starting from early approaches such as mathematical correction and the use of high-resolution ICP-MS, particular emphasis is placed on technological innovations that have enabled a paradigm shift. These include the introduction of collision and reaction cells (CRC), the use of kinetic energy discrimination, and the targeted implementation of chemical reactions for the selective removal of interfering species. Another major milestone is the establishment of triple quadrupole ICP-MS (ICP-QQQ), which offers unprecedented selectivity and robustness against complex matrices through controlled reaction chemistry.
Using selected case studies, the contribution demonstrates how these technological advancements have significantly improved analytical performance for greener chemistry and opened up new application areas—particularly in environmental and food analysis.
Part 2: Intelligence That Performs: The Next Generation of GC
(Sarah Kubik): The growing need for higher throughput, improved efficiency, and reduced downtime is driving innovation in gas chromatography (GC). Agilent’s new 8890B and 8860B GC systems feature a redesigned oven that delivers up to 30% faster cooldown times, reducing cycle times and increasing sample throughput. In addition, the 8890B and 8860B include smart features that simplify operation and maintenance. GC Assist provides continuous performance monitoring, parameter tracking, and user guidance, while Guided GC-MS Maintenance streamlines routine servicing and reduces downtime. Built-in gas and power consumption logging supports cost control and sustainability goals, making these systems efficient, intelligent solutions for modern analytical laboratories.
